1920년대에 미국의 경제는 아주 튼튼했고 생활은 좋았다.

 

제1차 세계대전이 막 끝난 후였다.

 

그래서 사람들은 전쟁이 아니라 평화에 관심을 쏟았다.

 

그들은 일자리가 있었고 많은 돈을 벌고 있었다.

 

새로운 과학기술들이 생겨나고 있었고, 사람들은 그것들을 살 여유가 있었다.

 

그들은 교외로 이사를 가서 단독주택에 살기 시작했다.

 

사람들은 여가시간이 있었으므로 밖으로 나가 즐길 수 있었다.

 

그러다가 1929년 10월 24일, 주식시장이 붕괴되었다.

 

순식간에 사람들은 수십억 달러를 잃었다.

 

회사들이 폐업하면서 수백만 명의 사람들이 일자리를 잃었다.

 

실업률이 상승했다.

 

당시의 대통령인 '허버트 후버'는 경제 문제로 비난을 받았다.

 

1932년, '프랭클린 루스벨트'가 미국의 새 대통령으로 선출되었다. 

 

루스벨트는 대공황을 끝낼 안을 가지고 있었다.

 

그의 안은 '뉴딜 정책'이라고 불렸다.

 

그는 경제에 대한 정부의 영향력을 증가시켰다. 

 

그는 정부가 사람들에게 일자리를 줄 수 있도록 노력했다.

 

1930년대에 미국의 생활은 아주 어려웠다. 

 

대공황이 끝난 것은 겨우 1941년에 제2차 세계대전이 시작되던 때였다. 

 

그러고 나서 미국 경제는 회복되기 시작했다.

<The Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression>

 

In the 1920s, the American economy was wery strong, and life was good.

 

World War I had just ended.

 

So people were interested in peace, not war.

 

They had jobs and were making a lot of money.

 

There were new technologies being created and people could afford to buy them.

 

They began moving to suburbs and living in houses.

 

People had leisure time, so they could go out and enjoy themselves.

 

Then, on October 24, 1929, the stock market crashed.

 

Instantly, people lost billions of dollars.

 

As companies went out of business, millions of people lost their jobs.

 

The unemployment rate climbed.

 

The president at that time, 'Herbert Hoover', was blamed for the economic problems.

 

In 1932, 'Franklin Roosevelt' was elected the new president of the United States.

 

Roosevelt had a plan to end the Great Depression.

 

His plan was called 'the New Deal'.

 

He increased the influence of the government on the economy. 

 

He tried to have the government give people jobs. 

 

In the 1930s, life in the U.S. was very difficult.

 

It was just when World War II began in 1942 that the Great Depression ended.

 

Then, the U.S. economy began to recover.
