<역사가들은 무슨 일을 하는가?>

 

역사가들은 과거를 연구한다.

 

그들은 과거의 사건과 과거에 살았던 사람들에 대해 관심을 갖는다.

 

그러나 역사가들이 단지 이름, 날짜, 장소만을 익히는 것은 아니다.

 

그보다는 과거의 사건을 해석하려고 노력한다.

 

그들은 어떤 사건이 왜 일어났는지를 알고 싶어 한다.

 

그들은 왜 어떤 사람이 특정한 방식으로 행동했는가를 알고 싶어 한다.

 

또 그들은 한 사건이 다른 사건을 어떻게 일어나게 했는지 알고 싶어 한다.

 

이렇게 하기 위해서 역사가들은 많은 자료를 연구해야 한다. 

 

우선 그들은 1차 자료를 이용한다.

 

이들은 어떤 사건이 발생한 동시대에 기록된 자료들이다.

 

그것들은 정기간행물일 수 있다. 그것들은 책일 수 있다.

 

그것들은 신문기사나 사진일 수 있다.

 

현대에는 심지어 비디어 테이프에 녹화된 기록일 수 있다. 

 

역사가들은 중요한 사건의 목격자들의 의견을 얻기 위해 1차 자료를 이용한다. 

 

그들은 또한 2차 자료도 이용한다.

 

이들은 사건을 목격하지 않은 사람들에 의해 쓰여진 저술들이다.

 

훌륭한 역사가들은 1차 자료와 2차 자료 둘 다 그들의 작업에 이용한다.

 

역사에는 많은 종류가 있다.

 

어떤 역사가들은 정치사를 좋아한다.

 

어떤 역사가들은 전사를 연구한다.

 

어떤 이들은 경제학에 초점을 맞춘다.

 

또 어떤 이들은 사회사나 문화사를 선호한다.

 

그것들 모두가 중요하다.

 

그리고 그것들 모두 우리가 과거를 더 잘 이해하는데 도움을 준다.

<What do Historians Do?>

 

Historians study the past.

 

They are interested in past events and people who lived in the past.

 

But historians do not just learn names, dates, and places.

 

Instead they try to interpret past events.

 

They want to know why an event happened. 

 

They want to know why a person acted in a certain way.

 

And they want to know how one event caused another to occur.

 

To do this, historians must study many sources.

 

First, they use primary sources.

 

These are sources that were recorded at the same time an event occurred.

 

They could be journals.

 

They could be books.

 

They could be newspaper articles or photographs.

 

In the present, they could even be recordings in the videotape.

 

Historians use primary sources to get the opinions of witness to important events.

 

They also use secondary sources.

 

These are works written by people who did not witness an event.

 

Good historians use both primary and secondary sources in their work.

 

There are many kinds of history.

 

Some historians like political history.

 

Others study military history.

 

Some focus on economics.

 

And others prefer social or cultural history.

 

All of them are important.

 

And all of them help us understand the past better.
