<메이플라워 호>

 

영국에 '필그림'이라고 불리는 사람들의 집단이 있었다.

 

그들은 그곳의 대부분의 사람들과 달랐다.

 

그들은 다른 사람들은 공유하지 않는 어떤 신앙을 가지고 있었다.

 

그래서 그들은 영국을 떠나 신세계로 가기를 원했다.

 

그들은 자기들을 아메리카로 데리고 갈 '메이플라워 호'라고 불리는 배를 빌렸다.

 

그들은 1620년에 떠나 두 달간의 항해 끝에 아메리카에 도착했다.

 

그들은 '허드슨 강' 유역으로 가기로 되어 있었다.

 

그러나 그들은 '플리머스록'이라고 하는 곳에 상륙했다.

 

그곳은 오늘날의 '메사추세츠' 주의 '케이프코드'에 있었다.

 

어쨌든 필그림들은 그곳에 정착하기로 결정했다.

 

첫겨울은 혹독했다. 많은 필그림들이 죽었다.

 

그러나 그곳의 아메리카 원주민들은 그들과 화친을 맺었다. 

 

그들의 수장은 '사모셋'이었다.

 

그는 필그림들과 함께 지낼 '스콴토'를 데려왔다.

 

스콴토와 다른 아메리카 원주민들은 필그림들에게 땅을 제대로 경작하는 법을 가르쳐 주었다.

 

그해에 필그림들은 많은 곡식을 수확했다.

 

그들은 아메리카 원주민들과 함께 사흘간의 큰 잔치를 열었다.

 

그것이 첫 추수감사절이었다.

 

해마다 필그림 식민지는 점점 더 강해졌다.

 

더 많은 식민지 이주자들이 영국에서 건너왔다.

 

그래서 식민지는 아주 성공적이 되었다.

<The Mayflower>

 

In Britain, there was a group of people called 'Pilgrims'.

 

They were different from most people there.

 

They had certain religious beliefs that others did not share.

 

So they wanted to leave Britain and go to the New World.

 

They hired a ship called 'the Mayflower' to take them to America.

 

They left in 1620 and landed in America after two months of sailing.

 

They were supposed to go to 'the Hudson River' area.

 

But they landed at place called 'Plymouth Rock'. 

 

It was on morden-day 'Cape Code' in 'Massachusetts'.

 

Anyway, the Pilgrims decided to settle there.

 

The first winter was hard.

 

Many Pilgrims died.

 

But the Native Americans there made peace with them.

 

Their leader was 'Samoset'.

 

He brought 'Squanto' to stay with Pilgrims.

 

Squanto and other Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to farm the land properly.

 

That year, the Pilgrims harvested many crops.

 

They had a big festival for three days with the Native Americans.

 

That was the first Thanksgiving.

 

Every year, the Pilgrim colony became stronger and stronger.

 

More colonists came from Britain.

 

So the colony became very successful.
