<지진>

 

이따금 땅이 갑자기 흔들리기 시작한다. 

 

건물과 다리들이 앞뒤로 움직인다.

 

심지어 무너질 수도 있다.

 

땅속 곳곳이 갈라지기 시작한다.

 

이것이 지진이다.

 

지진은 지구 전역에서 항상 발행한다.

 

대개의 경우 그들은 규모가 너무 작아서 우리는 그것을 느끼지도 못할 수 있다.

 

그러나 때로 아주 큰 지진이 있다.

 

이들은 큰 피해를 일으키고, 많은 사람들을 죽이고 심지어 지구의 모습을 바꾸기도 한다.

 

지구의 지각은 그것의 맨 윗부분이다.

 

지각은 많은 판으로 형성되어 있다.

 

이들은 '지각판'이라 불린다.

 

일곱 개의 커다란 판과 약 열두 개의 보다 작은 판들이 있다.

 

이 판들은 거대하다.

 

그러나 그들은 또한 아주 천천히 움직인다.

 

때로 그들은 서로 반대 방향으로 앞뒤로 움직인다. 

 

이것이 지진을 일으킨다.

 

'리히터 척도'는 지진의 강도를 잰다.

 

레벨 2 진동은 레벨 1 진동보다 10배 강력하다.

 

숫자가 하나씩 올라갈 때마다 지진의 강도는 10배씩 증가한다.

 

레벨 1에서 4는 약한 지진이다.

 

레벨 5의 지진은 얼마간의 피해를 입힐 수 있다.

 

레벨 6과 7은 위험할 수 있다.

 

레벨 8과 9는 엄청난 죽음과 파괴를 초래할 수 있다.

<Earthquakes>

 

Sometimes, the ground suddenly begins to shake.

 

Buildings and bridges move back and forth.

 

They might even fall down.

 

Places in the ground begins to crack.

 

This is an earthquake.

 

Earthquakes happen all the time all around the Earth.

 

Most of the time, they are so small that we cannot even feel them.

 

But sometimes there are very large earthquakes.

 

These can cause great damage, kill many people, and even change the Earth's shape.

 

The Earth's crust is its top part.

 

The crust is formed of many plates.

 

These are called 'tectonic plates'.

 

There are seven large plates and around twelve smaller ones.

 

These plates are enormous.

 

But they also move really slowly.

 

Sometimes they move back and forth against each other.

 

This causes earthquakes.

 

'The Richter scale' measures the power of earthquakes.

 

A level 2 quake is ten times as powerul as level 1 quake.

 

Every time each number increase, the power of earthquake increase as 10 times.

 

Level 1 to 4 are weak earthquakes.

 

Level 5 earthquakes can cause some damage.

 

Level 6 and 7 can be dangerous.

 

Level 8 and 9 can cause huge amounts of death and destruction.
