<지구의 형성>

 

수십억 년 전에 태양이 형성되었다.

 

태양계에는 암석과 가스로 이루어진 거대한 원반이 있었다.

 

결국 이들 암석과 가스가 행성을 형성하기 시작했다.

 

이것은 약 45억 년 전의 일이었다.

 

지구는 태양으로부터 세 번째 행성이었다.

 

처음에 지구는 몹시 뜨거웠다.

 

하지만 수백만 년에 걸쳐서 지구는 식기 시작했다.

 

지구가 식으면서 대기에 수증기가 형성되기 시작했다.

 

이것은 온 지구를 뒤덮는 구름을 만들어 냈다.

 

곧 그 구름은 온 지구에 엄청난 양의 물을 떨어뜨리기 시작했다.

 

이것이 지구의 대양, 바다, 강, 호수를 만들어 냈다.

 

그러나 약 45억 년 전의 지구는 오늘날의 지구와 다르게 생겼다.

 

오늘날에는 일곱 개의 대륙이 있다.

 

과거에는 그렇지 않았다.

 

대륙의 수가 달라왔었다.

 

한때 전 지구에는 단 하나의 대륙만 있었다.

 

왜일까?

 

한 가지 실마리는 판구조론의 이론이다.

 

지구의 지각을 이루는 많은 판이 있다.

 

이 판들은 거대한 땅덩어리이다.

 

그리고 그들은 끊임없이 움직이고 있다.

 

지구가 나이를 먹으면서 이 판들은 천천히 움직인다.

 

오늘날에는 일곱 개의 대륙이 있다.

 

미래에는 아마 더 많거나 적은 대륙이 있게 될 것이다.

<The Formation of the Earth>

 

Billions of years ago, the sun formed.

 

There was a huge disk of rocks and gases in the solar system.

 

Eventually, these rocks and gases began to form planets.

 

This was about 4.5 billion years ago.

 

The Earth was the third planet from the sun.

 

At first, the Earth was extremely hot.

 

But, over millions of years, it began to cool down.

 

As the Earth cooled, water vapor started forming in the atmosphere.

 

This caused the creation of clouds all over the planet.

 

Soon, the clouds began dropping huge amount of water all over the planet.

 

This caused the creation of the Earth's oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes.

 

But the Earth 4.5 billion years ago looked different from the Earth of today.

 

Today, there are seven continents.

 

In the past, this was not true. 

 

There have been different numbers of continents.

 

Once, there was just one continent on the entire planet.

 

Why?

 

One clue is the theory of plate tectonics.

 

There are many plates that make up the Earth's curst.

 

These plates are huge pieces of land.

 

And they are constantly moving.

 

As the Earth ages, the plates slowly move around.

 

Today, there are seven continents.

 

In the future, perhaps there will be more or less.
