<화산 폭발>

 

때로 화산은 갑자기 폭발한다. 

 

그들은 엄청난 양의 재와 가스 그리고 용암을 분출한다.

 

심지어 수많은 사람들을 죽일 수도 있다. 

 

화산이 폭발하도록 만드는 것은 무엇일까?

 

지구 속 깊은 곳에는 대개 많은 압력이 있다.

 

또한 땅속 깊은 곳의 온도는 아주 높을 수 있다.

 

사실 그 온도는 종종 암석을 녹일 수 있을 만큼 높다.

 

지하에 있는 녹은 암석을 '마그마'라고 부른다.

 

마그마는 끊임없이 지표면으로 올라오려고 한다. 

 

땅속에는 함께 모인 커다란 마그마 웅덩이가 있다.

 

이들은 '마그마 방'이라고 불린다.

 

이들 마그마 방은 흔히 화산 밑에 존재한다.

 

마침내 땅 밑의 압력이 너무 극심해진다.

 

마그마가 지표면으로 밀고 올라온다.

 

이것이 화산을 폭발하게 한다.

 

화산이 폭발하면 그것은 흔히 재와 가스를 방출한다.

 

또한 마그마를 방출할 수도 있다.

 

지표면 위에 있는 마그마를 '용암'이라고 부른다.

 

용암은 흔히 화산의 사면을 타고 흘러내리다가 마침내는 식어서 응고된다.

 

폭발의 크기는 방출된 압력의 양에 달려 있다.

 

어떤 화산들은 일정량의 용암을 방출한다.

 

이런 화산들은 적은 양의 압력을 가지고 있다.

 

어떤 화산들은 폭발적으로 분출한다.

 

그들은 재를 공중으로 수마일 날릴 수 있다.

 

그들은 용암과 가스를 그 지역의 아주 멀리까지 방출할 수 있다.

 

이런 것들이 가장 위험한 폭발이다.

 

'베수비오 산', '크라카토아 산' 그리고 '세인트 헬레나 산'은 모두 많은 사람들을 죽인 폭발적인 분출을 하였다.

<Volcanic Explosions>

 

Sometimes, volcanoes suddenly explode.

 

They erupt tons of ash, gas, and lava.

 

They might even kill large numbers of people.

 

What is it that makes a volcano explode?

 

Deep in the Earth, there is usually a lot of pressure.

 

Also, the temperature deep underground can be very high.

 

In fact, it is often high enough to melt rocks.

 

Melted rock that is beneath the ground is called 'magma'.

 

The magma is constantly trying to move up toward the surface.

 

Under the earth, there are large pools of magma that have gathered together.

 

These are called 'magma chambers'.

 

These magma chambers often exist beneath volcanoes.

 

Eventually, the pressure beneath the earth becomes too high.

 

The magma forces up to the surface.

 

This causes a volcano to explode.

 

When a volcano explodes, it often erupts ash and gas.

 

It can also erupt magma.

 

Magma that is on the surface is called 'lava'.

 

The lava often flow down the sides of the volcano until it eventually cools and hardens.

 

The size of the explosion depends on the amount of pressure that is erupted.

 

Some volcanos erupt a steady amount of lava.

 

These have a small amount of pressure.

 

Other volcanoes erupt explosively.

 

They can shoot ash miles into the air.

 

They can erupt lava and gas very far in the area.

 

These are the most dangerous explosions.

 

'Mt. vesuvius', 'Mt. krakatoa', and 'Mt. St. Helens' all had explosive eruptions that killed many people.
