<대멸종>

 

이따금 지구 상에는 대멸종이 발생한다.

 

이런 일이 일어나면 수많은 종이 모두 한꺼번에 멸종한다.

 

과학자들은 지구의 역사 동안 최소한 다섯 차례의 대멸종이 있었음을 확인했다.

 

이들 대멸종 기간에 지구 상의 모든 생명체의 95%까지가 죽었다.

 

마지막 대멸종은 약 6천5백만 년 전에 일어났다.

 

과학자들은 이것을 'K-T경계 멸종(백악기와 신생대 제3기의 멸종)'이라고 말한다.

 

6천5백만 년 전의 지구의 모습은 아주 달랐다.

 

인간이 없었다. 

 

대신에 공룡들이 땅과 바다를 지배했다.

 

이것은 '백악기'라고 불리는 시대였다.

 

그러다가 갑자기 대멸종이 있었다. 

 

과학자들은 무슨 일이 일어났는지 정확히 알지 못한다.

 

그러나 그들 대부분은 소행성이나 혜성이 지구에 부딪쳤다고 생각한다.

 

이것이 지구에 엄청난 변화를 초래했다. 

 

엄청난 양의 먼지가 대기 속으로 쏟아져 들어왔다. 

 

이것이 태양을 차단하였다.

 

햇빛이 전혀 지구에 닿지 못했으므로 많은 식물들이 죽었다.

 

그러자 그 식물들을 먹는 동물들도 죽었다.

 

그리고 그 동물들을 먹는 동물들도 역시 죽었다.

 

K-T경계 멸종은 모든 공룡들을 죽였다.

 

그리고 지구 상의 다른 종들의 약 절반도 역시 죽었다.

 

물론 모든 생명체가 다 죽지는 않았다.

 

사실 어떤 생명체는 번창했다.

 

K-T경계 멸종 이후 포유류의 수가 증가하기 시작했다.

 

궁극적으로 인간이 진화했다.

 

그러므로 K-T경계 멸종이 없었다면 인간은 존재하지 않았을지도 모른다.

<Mass Extinctions>

 

Sometimes, a mass extinction occurs on the Earth.

 

When this happens, large numbers of species all go extinct at once.

 

Scientists have identified at least five mass extinctions during the Earth's history.

 

During these mass extinctions, up to 95% of all life on the earth was killed.

 

The last mass extinction happened about 65 million years ago.

 

Scientists call it 'the K-T Extinction'.

 

65 million years ago, the Earth looked very different.

 

There were no humans.

 

Instead, dinosaurs ruled the land and the seas.

 

This was a time called 'the Cretaceous Period'.

 

Then, suddenly, there was a mass extinction.

 

Scientists are not exactly sure what happend.

 

But most of them believe that an minor planet or comet struck the Earth.

 

This caused a tremendous change on the Earth.

 

Large amounts of dust were thrown into the atmosphere.

 

This blocked the sun.

 

No sunlight could reach the Earth, so many plants died.

 

The animals that ate the plants then died.

 

And the animals that ate those animals died, too.

 

The K-T Extinction killed all of the dinosaurs. 

 

And about half of the other species on the earth died, too.

 

Of course, all life did not die.

 

In fact, some life flourished.

 

After the K-T Extinction, a number of mammals began to increase.

 

Eventually, humans evolved.

 

So, without the K-T Extinction, humans might not have existed.
