유성생식을 하는 식물은 남성기관과 여성기관을 둘 다 가지고 있다.

 

식물은 생식을 하려면 수분이 되어야 한다.

 

남성기관인 수술의 화분이 여성기관인 암술에 닿아야 한다.

 

이렇게 되는 데에는 두 가지 주요 방법이 있다.

 

첫 번째는 바람이다. 

 

때로는 바람이 화분을 한 식물에서 다른 식물로 나른다.

 

그러나 이것은 그리 효과적인 방법이 아니다.

 

다행히 벌이나 나비 같은 많은 곤충들이 식물이 수분하도록 돕는다.

 

식물의 꽃은 흔히 과밀(꿀)을 생성하는데, 그것은 곤충들이 좋아하는 것이다.

 

곤충들이 식물의 과밀을 모을 때 그들은 화분을 묻히게 된다.

 

곤충들이 이 식물 저 식물로 옮겨 다니면서 그들에게 묻어있던 화분이 다른 식물의 암술에 비벼져서 묻는다.

 

이것이 그 식물을 수분시킨다.

 

이제 화분이 옮겨졌으므로 그 식물은 수정되어야 한다.

 

식물의 암술머리는 화분관을 가지고 있다.

 

최소한 한 개의 화분이 그 관으로 내려가야 한다.

 

그런데 이것은 그 관이 아주 작기 때문에 쉽지가 않으므로, 식물은 한 개의 화분이 관으로 확실히 내려갈 수 있도록 대게 많은 양의 화분이 필요하다.

 

일단 그렇게 되면 남성 세포와 여성 세포가 결합할 수 있다. 

 

이것이 그 식물의 수정을 일어나게 한다. 

 

그리고 그것은 이제 생식할 수 있다.

<Pollination and Fertilization>

 

Plants with sexual reproduction have both male and female parts.

 

A plant must be pollinated in order to reproduce.

 

Pollen from the stamen that is the male part must reach the pistil that is female part.

 

There are two major ways this happens.

 

The first is the wind.

 

Sometimes, the wind carries pollen from one plant to another.

 

But, this is not a very effective method.

 

Fortunately, many insects such as bees and butterflies help pollinate plants.

 

Plants' flowers often produce nectar, which insects like.

 

When the insects collect a plant's nectar, they pick up pollen.

 

As the insect move from plant to plant, the pollen on them rubs off on the pistil of other plants.

 

This pollinates the plants.

 

Now that the pollen has been transferred, the plant must be fertilized.

 

The stigma of plant has a pollen tube.

 

At least one grain of pollen must go down that tube.

 

This is not easy because the tube is so small, so plants often need many grains of pollen in order that one can surely go down the tube.

 

Once that happens, then the male and female cells can unite.

 

This causes the fertilization of the plant.

 

And it can now reproduce.
