현대의 인간 사회는 에너지로 움직인다.

 

대부분의 기계는 작동하려면 전기가 필요하다.

 

인간은 전기를 만들어 내는 여러 다양한 방법을 가지고 있다.

 

그러나 어떤 방법들은 환경에 해롭다.

 

예를 들면, 화석연료는 가장 흔한 종류의 에너지이다.

 

그것들은 석탄, 석유, 천연가스를 포함한다.

 

먼저 사람들은 그것들을 땅에서 채굴해야 한다.

 

이것은 때로 환경에 해를 끼칠 수 있다.

 

그러나 요즘에는 과학자들이 그것을 할 수 있는 보다 깨끗하고 효과적인 방법들을 만들어 내고 있다.

 

그러므로 환경이 그렇게 많이 손상을 입지는 않는다.

 

그러나 사람들이 이들 화석연료를 태울 때, 그들은 환경에 해가 될지도 모르는 가스를 방출할 수 있다.

 

조석 에너지는 전기를 만드는 또 다른 방법이다.

 

이것은 전기를 만들기 위해 바다의 조수를 이용한다.

 

그러나 어떤 종류의 조석 에너지는 많은 물고기와 다른 바다 생물들을 죽일 수 있다.

 

또한 댐도 깨끗한 수력발전 에너지를 많이 만들어 낼 수 있다.

 

그러나 댐은 호수를 만들어 강의 흐름을 바꾼다.

 

그래서 그들은 환경을 아주 많이 바꿀 수 있다.

 

원자력(핵 에너지)은 아주 강력한 형태의 에너지이다.

 

그것은 싸다.

 

그것은 또한 아주 깨끗하다.

 

그러나 많은 사람들이 그것을 두려워한다.

 

왜냐하면 그것은 방사성 물질을 사용하기 때문이다.

 

또한 과거에 여러 원자력 발전소에서 사고가 몇 건 있었다.

 

그러나 오늘날에는 기술력이 훨씬 더 좋다.

 

그래서 지금은 많은 나라들이 더 많은 원자력 발전소를 세우기 시작하고 있다.

<Energy and Environmental Risks>

 

Human society in the present runs with energy.

 

Most machines need electricity to operate.

 

Humans have many different ways to create electricity.

 

But some ways are harmful to the environment.

 

For example, fossil fuels are the most common kind of energy.

 

They include coal, oil, and natural gas.

 

First, people have to mine them from the ground.

 

This can sometimes harm the environment.

 

However, scientists are creating cleaner and more efficient ways to do that these days.

 

So the environment is not damaged as much.

 

But when people burn these fossil fuels, they can release gases that might harm the environment.

 

Tidal energy is another way to make electricity.

 

This uses the ocean tides to make electricity.

 

But some kind of tidal energy can kill many fish and other sea creatures.

 

Also, dams can create lots of clean hydroelectric energy.

 

But dams create lakes and change the flow of rivers.

 

So they can change the environment very much.

 

Nuclear energy is a very powerful form of energy.

 

It is cheap.

 

It is also very clean.

 

But many people are afraid of it because it uses radioactive materials.

 

Also, there have been some accidents at nuclear power plants in the past.

 

But the technology is much better these days.

 

So many countries are starting to build more nuclear power plants now.
