영어로 말하기 훈련(143 확률과 통계)

아래 한글문장을 본인이 외국인에게 통역한다고 생각하고 바로 영어로 말해 보세요.

한 Chapter가 끝날 때까지 영어문장을 보지 마세요.

끝까지 했으면 영어문장을 보시고 교정 및 반복 연습하세요.

 

본 영어문장은 실제 미국 초등학교 교과서에 실린 문장이며, 학습하기 좋도록 제가 일부 각색했습니다.

<확률과 통계>

 

어떤 것의 확률은 그것이 일어날 가능성이다.

 

이것은 흔히 퍼센트로 표현된다.

 

예를 들어, 동전을 튕겨 올리면 앞면이 나올 가능성은 50%이다.

 

주사위를 굴리면 숫자 1이 나올 가능성은 16.67%이다..

 

어떤 일이 일어날  수 있는 경우의 수를 취하여 그것을 총 결과의 수로 나눔으로써 확률을 결정할 수 있다.

 

반면, 통계는 데이터를 수집하고 정리하고 해석하는 수학의 분야이다.

 

일단 데이터가 수집되면, 그것을 분석하는 가장 쉬운 방법들 중 하나는 그래프를 가지고 하는 것이다.

 

확률을 수반하는 데이터에 대해서는 원 그래프 혹은 파이 차트가 사용하기 가장 좋다.

 

이들은 100퍼센트의 점수로 나뉠 수 있다.

 

어떤 것이 일어날 가능성이 50퍼센트있고, 어떤 다른 것이 일어날 가능성이 25퍼센트 있고, 또 어떤 것이 일어날 가능성이 25퍼센트 있을 수 있다.

 

이것은 원 그래프에서 쉽게 보일 수 있다.

 

반면, 어떤 통계들은 막대 그래프에서 가장 잘 기록이 된다.

 

이들은 x축과 y축을 가진 단순한 도표이다.

 

예를 들어, 어떤 사람은 몇몇 학생들의 가장 잘하는 과목을 기록하는 중일 수 있다.

 

수업은 영어, 수학, 과학, 역사이다.

 

이들 수업은 가로인 x축에 놓인다.

 

각 수업에서 잘하는 학생들의 수는 세로인 y축에 놓인다.

 

이렇게 하는 것이 그 데이터를 보고 해석하기 쉽게 만든다.

<Probability and Statistics>

 

The probability of something is the chance that it will happen.

 

This is often expressed as a percentage.

 

For example, if you flip a coin, the chance of heads showing is 50%.

 

If you roll a die, the chance of number 1 showing is 16.67%.

 

You can determine the probability by taking the number of ways something can happen and dividing it by the total number of outcomes.

 

On the other hand, statistics is the field of math that collects, organizes, and interprets data.

 

Once data has been collected, one of the easiest ways to analyze it is with graphs.

 

As for data that involves probability, circle graphs or pie charts are the best to use.

 

These can be divided into 100 percentage points.

 

Perhaps there is a fifty percent chance of something happening, a twenty-five percent chance of something else happening, and a twenty-five percent chance of something different happening.

 

This can easily be shown on a circle graph.

 

On the other hand, other statistics are best recorded on a bar graph.

 

These are simple charts with an x-axis and y-axis.

 

For example, perhaps a certain person is recording some students' best subject.

 

The classes are English, math, science, and history.

 

These classes go on the x-axis, which is horizontal.

 

The number of students that do well in each class goes on the y-axis, which is vertical.

 

This makes the data easy to see and to interpret.
